The weekend proved to be a mixed bag for the Quakers rowing teams. While the men’s lightweight rowing team had a successful weekend against MIT, the women’s team finished third out of the three teams in the Connell Cup.
In Cambridge, Mass., the men’s lightweight rowing team secured a dominant win against MIT on the Charles River. The Quakers secured a full sweep of the Engineers, with wins in the varsity eight, second varsity/frosh eight, third varsity and fours races. The standout performance of the day was the Penn frosh eight team, which dominated the MIT 2V and Penn 2V boats against which they were competing, winning the race by 10 seconds.
Close to home, Columbia and Yale defeated the women in the Connell Cup, a race held on the Schuylkill River annually since 1975. Yale retained its crown by finishing first overall in the event among the three teams despite Columbia’s victory in the first varsity eight race. The Bulldogs won three of the five total races in the event. Penn managed to notch a victory in the third varsity eight race over Yale. The overall score was 21-18-6 to Yale, Columbia and Penn respectively.
The men’s heavyweight rowing team was off this week but returns to action on Saturday, April 6, when it takes part in the varsity-only San Diego Crew Classic. The men’s lightweight team will return to the Schuylkill River this weekend to take part in a pair of regattas, hosting the Matthews-Leonard Cup with Cornell and Harvard as well as a race with Mercyhurst. The women’s team is hosting the Orange Challenge Cup against Northeastern and Syracuse this weekend also on the Schuylkill.
