As the Penn community returned to campus after spring break, the men’s golf team returned to action at the 16th annual Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate in Aiken, S.C., hosted by the University of South Carolina-Aiken at the par-70, 6617-yard setup of the Palmetto Golf Club.
The 54-hole tournament was held over two days from March 11 to March 12, with the first two rounds taking place on Monday followed by the final round on Tuesday.
In the end, the Quakers finished 11th out of a field of 18 teams. Augusta State won the tournament that featured schools such as Akron, Clemson, Maryland, Nebraska, North Carolina State, South Carolina and Virginia.
Penn’s best golfer in the tournament was junior Max Marsico, who shot rounds of 76, 71 and 73 to shoot a 10-over-par 220 and finish tied for 22nd out of 90 golfers.
Sophomore Austin Powell was not far behind, finishing tied for 32nd via rounds of 74, 71 and 78 for a combined 13-over-par 223. Also finishing in the top 40 was senior captain P. J. Fielding, who shot 72, 75 and 77 for a combined 14-over par 224.
At the end of the first round, the Quakers were in 13th place. Fielding had the lowest first round for the Red and Blue with a 2-over-par 72.
The Quakers then improved to tie for ninth place at the end of the second round before falling back in the final round.
The Quakers’ next meet, the Yale Spring Invitational, will take place in New Haven, Conn. on Saturday, April 6.
