Penn’s squash teams returned from their first season competition with mixed results. Both the men’s and women’s teams traveled to Washington, D.C., this past weekend for a doubleheader competition against Bates College and George Washington University.

The Penn women, ranked fifth in the nation, swept both teams with a 9-0 finish in each match.

The men also snagged a win over Bates with a final score of 5-4. In their second set of matches for the weekend, the Quakers fell to the Colonials in a close match, 5-4. The men appeared to be coming on strong with a 4-3 lead but ultimately fell in the end. The team’s only wins came from Liam Quinn, Dan Judd, Jack Maine and Tyler Odell.

After losing to GW, the Penn men still sit at ninth nationally as they look forward to their next competition at Drexel — which they closed out with a 9-0 finish last year — this Wednesday. The women will also take on the Dragons Wednesday.

Neither team will face another Ivy opponent until January, which gives them plenty of time to work out any kinks before league play begins.

Last year, the women finished 5-2 in the Ancient Eight, losing only to Yale and Harvard, both of whom they beat in their league scrimmages earlier this season.

The men were 2-5 in the league a season ago, beating only Brown and Columbia, leaving plenty of room for improvement.
