Four days after its upset of defending Ivy League runner-up Cornell, the women’s field hockey team couldn’t contain city foe Villanova, as Penn fell, 2-1.
The Wildcats (4-4) outshot the Quakers, 18-6, over the course of the game, but Penn senior goalkeeper Kieran Sweeney’s season-high 12 saves kept her team close.
After Villanova freshman Jessica Swoboda got the Wildcats on the board first with a goal 22 minutes into the first half, Penn (1-5) answered quickly. Freshman attack Emily Corcoran connected on her second goal in as many games — this one unassisted on a breakaway — less than a minute later.
The contest remained scoreless for 34 minutes before Swoboda, a Hanover Township, Pa., native, again found the back of the net for her sixth goal of the season.
Corcoran led the Quakers with three of the team’s six shots, while freshman Alex Iqbal, senior Kirstin Snyder and sophomore Julie Tahan also got shots on goal.
Penn continues its Ivy season Saturday in Cambridge, Mass., against Harvard.
