It is wonderful that television talk show host Maury Povich has donated $1 million to journalism programs at this renowned University.
Povich’s selfless gift causes me to wonder whether he fancies himself a journalist rather than the slime merchant that he has become through hosting a program that is a repulsive abomination.
The Maury Povich Show is a forum for the exploitation of the uneducated, the foolish and the vulnerable — society’s lowest of the low, whose trials and tribulations are lapped up by a voyeuristic, unsophisticated viewership.
Povich is a talented, intelligent, charming, engaging man. Does he ever ponder the ramifications of pursuing a career that mainstreams and showcases a daily freak show or the extent to which he has flushed once-valued broadcast standards down the drain?
I hope that Penn journalism students draw no connection between their field of study and the school’s latest benefactor, who has made millions through peddling visual and audio smut.
