On Monday, United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon will speak at Irvine Auditorium on the topic of empowering women, according to the Office of the President.
Ki-moon’s address will open the annual Global Colloquium of University Presidents. The two-day colloquium will bring 50 university presidents from around the world together to focus on “Empowering Women to Change the World: What the U.N. and Universities Can Do.”
The event’s topic comes in response to the Secretary-General’s International Women’s Day speech, which called for universities to be more involved in international public policy issues.
Former Chilean President, Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations and executive director of U.N. Women Michelle Bachelet, as well as Senior Adviser to President Obama and Chairwoman of the White House Commission on Women and Girls Valerie Jarrett are also scheduled to speak at the event.
Penn President Amy Gutmann is a founding member of the Colloquium, which is sponsored by Penn in collaboration with Columbia, Yale, Princeton and New York universities.
“The world will realize its full potential only when we address gender inequality and empower women,” Gutmann said in a statement.
“Universities have an important role to play in empowering women through education, research and community service and in serving as institutional exemplars of gender equality, diversity and inclusive participation in leadership.”
Update: The event will take place from 5-6:30 p.m. Monday in Irvine Auditorium and is open to the public. Attendees should RSVP to opevents@pobox.upenn.edu.
