Sunday night, the Undergraduate Assembly discussed a proposal to install and utilize stereo systems in dining halls.
Currently, Kings Court dining hall has a built-in stereo system; however, it is rarely used.
Although debate over next year’s UA budget consumed most of Sunday night’s meeting, the “Stereo Systems in Dining Halls” discussion paper — authored by UA members Tiffany Zhu, a Wharton freshman, and Tyler Ernst, a Wharton and Engineering junior — also garnered notice.
The discussion paper notes that “while Bon Appetit, Penn Dining, and the UA have been actively improving the quality of offerings at [dining halls]” little has been done to improve their ambiance.
Zhu said she thought the installation of stereo systems in dining halls would “create a much more lively mood” for students during meals.
Ernst added that Penn Dining expressed support for such an initiative.
Zhu and Ernst also addressed the UA body with questions about implementing this initiative.
The UA discussed the possibility of playing WQHS — Penn’s independent student radio station — in the dining halls, although many members expressed opposition to such a measure.
College sophomore and UA member Chris Cruz proposed a jukebox style sound system which would allow students to control the music played in dining halls.
The UA was due to discuss a resolution addressing the UPenn Alert Emergency Notification System, but UA members tabled the resolution until March 20.
