The Daily Pennsylvanian reported Friday that Penn undergraduate total undergraduate fees will rise 3.9 percent for the 2011-12 academic year — up to $53,976.
These figures are starkly different from the 1958-59 school year, when undergraduate tuition was $1,000, and total expenses were around $2,000. Tuition did not increase for that year or the year before.
The DP reported that in 1958, tuition and fees paid by students accounted for a decreasing proportion of University expenses — and that gifts and endowment income made up for the difference.
The last time the University saw a tuition hike smaller than 3.9 percent was 43 years ago.
