The Blizzard of ’96 blanketed the Philadelphia area in 40 inches of snow, with snow drifts of over four feet.
Then-Executive Vice President John Fry closed campus Monday and Tuesday that week, marking the first time the University had been shut down since 1994. Classes resumed for the spring semester that Wednesday.
A crew of about 50 to 60 people worked three 14-hour days to ensure that the campus was safe and ready for returning students Wednesday, The Daily Pennsylvanian reported.
1996 held the record in Philadelphia for highest snowfall until 2010.
