At 4:30 this afternoon, members of Penn Leads the Vote and Penn Cheer gathered outside Van Pelt Library on College Green to meet Penn President Amy Gutmann and lead her to the polls.
Dressed in red and navy PLTV 2010 shirts, the group of students listened to Political Science Professor John Diiulio introduce the similarly t-shirt-clad Gutmann. Diiulio called the gathering a “testament to the civic spirit of Penn.”
Gutmann encouraged students to be a model for engaging other Americans to vote. “There’s nothing that captures the Penn spirit better than Penn Leads the Vote,” she said.
College senior and PLTV executive co-director Jared Fries presented Gutmann with “Americana stunna shades” before walking with the group to Steinberg Hall-Deitrich Hall.
As the club marched by the president’s side, cheerleaders led the group and shouted “V-O-T-E” while walking west on Locust Walk.
As the group reached its destination at Steinberg-Deitrich, PLTV members applauded Gutmann as she ascended the stairs to cast her ballot.
Bina Nayee, a College freshman and student in Diiulio’s Political Science 130 class, said she thought Gutmann was “very proactive in trying to get students to vote.”
College senior Christiana Dietzen, who is also in the class, said Gutmann made voting "seem important."
