Penn Leads the Vote reports that 1,460 students turned out to vote today, according to PLTV Executive Co-Director and College senior Jared Fries.
Though the polling locations PLTV used to calculate turnout are open to other community members, most — 97 or even 99 percent — of registrants are students, PLTV Co-Director and College senior Pam Putnam explained.
Fries said the turnout figure is “essentially even” with the 1,500-person turnout in 2006.
As a result, he called the PLTV efforts today “a great success.”
The group made 500 phone calls over a two-hour period from its “war room” to remind registered voters who had not yet done so to go to the polls.
This resulted in a voting surge at the end of the day, when almost twice as many voters came in per hour between 6 and 8 p.m. compared to any prior hour during the day.
PLTV leaders said there have not been any problems with polling booths on campus today.
