All members of the Penn community received an e-mail on the University’s Missing Student Procedures from the Office of the Provost, the Division of Human Resources and the Office of University Communications last Friday.
The alert notified all students of their opportunity to give the University contact information for a person to notify if they are discovered missing — a policy which is consistent with the regulations of the Higher Education Opportunity Act of 2008.
According to the Office of the Provost, the e-mail was sent out by the Vice Provost for University Life’s office due to a federal mandate.
Matt Waller, spokesman for the office of the Vice Provost for University Life, wrote in an e-mail that the HEOA “requires that universities provide this notice to the community. That was the sole reason it was sent to students at this time.” To his knowledge, Waller added, there are no plans to send out any similar messages in the future.
