While all three rowing teams are in action this weekend in Ivy competition, the men’s heavyweight squad knows better than the rest what to expect from its conference opponent.
As it competes for the Blackwell Cup on the Schuylkill tomorrow morning, No. 18 Penn will face a No. 12 Columbia team that it raced just last week.
In that regatta, the Quakers dropped four of their five races, but coach Greg Myhr hopes some quicker starts will allow his team to prevail over the Lions as well as No. 7 Yale.
Penn has a successful history in the Blackwell Cup, established in 1927. The Quakers’ last Cup win in 2002 was the culmination of a four-year winning streak.
A victory tomorrow would not only signal progress in the first-year coach’s rebuilding project but would also be a fitting send-off for the team’s seven seniors in their last home race.
The lightweights will share the Schuylkill against the same opponents in the Dodge Cup.
Coach Nick Baker has been working the team especially hard after last week’s photo-finish loss to Cornell in the varsity eight race. The team looks to bring an end to Yale’s dominance of this regatta since Penn’s last win in 1992.
Meanwhile, the women’s team is on the road for the first time this spring, travelling to New Brunswick, N. J., with two trophies on the line.
In the varsity race, the Quakers aim to prevail over Cornell and Rutgers for the Raritan Cup for the fourth straight year.
