Harvard University announced it will create the first endowed professorship for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Studies in the United States.
“This is an extraordinary moment in Harvard’s history and in the history of this rapidly emerging field,” Harvard Overseer Mitchell Adams said in a press release.
The chair will be for a series of visiting professors to teach about LGBT studies at the private university for one semester each. It will be named after former Harvard history and literature professor F.O. Matthiessen, who was gay.
Harvard President Drew Gilpin Faust called the creation of the professorship “an important milestone.”
The visiting professor endowment was made possible from a $1.5 million gift from the Harvard Gay and Lesbian Caucus, according to a press release.
