Due to safety concerns, four design alternatives to the towers above the road deck of the South Street Bridge were introduced to community members on Monday.
The design of these glass-and-steel towers - which will take the place of the four watch towers that have been demolished - is the last step of the redesign, 30th Ward Democratic leader Marcia Wilkof said.
Community members were shown sketches and were given the opportunity to comment on them.
"Based on the comments that were made, we will advance those sketches and attempt to come out with a design that is more appropriate for the bridge," said Wilkof, who is working with Jim Campbell, director of the South Street Bridge Coalition.
According to Wilkof, the selection process will not hinder the schedule of the reconstruction.
"We are going through a public process, and the design will be decided really quickly," she said.
The next level of the process, Wilkof added, is to gain approval from the Philadelphia Art Commission and Historical Commission.
