Students now have a reason - besides the return of fried Oreos and Mask & Wig's Saturday afternoon performance, of course - to start getting excited about this year's Spring Fling.
Guster and Akon, SPEC's two selections for Spring Fling, are not only both known by fans of their respective genres but marque names worthy of a major concert. Together the two will appeal to a diverse group of students, and they will almost guarantee a big crowd at Franklin Field come the Friday night of Fling.
And these two picks build upon recent years' successful, strong, crowd-drawing Fling bands: Gym Class Heroes and Ludacris last year, and Ben Folds and Third Eye Blind the year before. SPEC pledged to listen to students' input when selecting artists, and we're sure that their efforts to grab big-name groups that Penn students like and will be entertained by have paid off. We're similarly confident that ticket sales this year will reflect the following that Guster and Akon have.
Ticket prices, however, could prove to be a deterrent to some who wish to attend. While attracting artists who will attract a crowd is paramount, keeping in mind that most students are concerned about maintaining a budget is also key. This year's sticker price of $30 is steep, and is also an increase from the last few years. It's understandable that well-known artists cost more to bring to campus, and with increased costs come increased ticket prices, but it's disappointing nonetheless.
Still, you'll see us dancing along at the concert.
