Coming off the likes of Paul Krugman, Nicholas Kristof and Maya Angelou, it's easy to become blase about the caliber of speakers that Penn attracts. And while all the highly publicized speakers visiting this semester have been engaging and interesting successes, the speakers gracing campus this week are particularly commendable.
For this upcoming week, we're excited about the choice of Madeleine Albright for Saturday night and SPEC Film's choice of Spike Lee as their first keynote speaker is especially exciting.
Albright is another widely lauded SPEC Conaissance keynote-speaker choice, following in the path of Anderson Cooper, Karl Rove and Henry Kissinger. With few missteps, they've listened to what students want in their speakers and have delivered.
SPEC Film's decision to bring a new, film-oriented speaker series offers an exciting new niche of speakers. On a campus dominated by political, nonprofit and business speakers, SPEC Film's choice of Lee is both serious and socially aware, but also brings the added component of a working artist, which will help attract a greater variety of Penn students. We hope that, in future years, the program is able to continue to bring artists that blend the cinematic and the social, the political stories and the personal stories.
