Feb Club, like Hey Day and Spring Fling, is a Penn tradition that, while not clean fun, is a good, genuine way of bringing classes together.
The premise is sweet and simple - build a sense of camaraderie and some old-fashioned school spirit toward Penn with friends as well as the students you've never met through a one-social-activity-per-night schedule in February. Every year it's met with enthusiasm from the senior class, many of whom have been anticipating the month's festivities since their freshman year.
In the past, though, some students have not been able to participate in Feb Club events - either because they occur during religious observances or because the bar-heavy schedule often excludes those who are still under 21. And because Feb Club awards prizes to students who attend the most events, students who couldn't attend lost out on the chance to win the best prizes as well as bonding opportunities.
This is why it's refreshing to hear about the recently introduced, modified Feb Club point system, created specifically to assist those students who are precluded from attending. The new system - whereby students detail their conflict to a "Feb Club Guru" in an e-mail explanation to receive points despite their absence from events - preserves the spirit of Feb Club, as well as the competitive aspect, without punishing students with extenuating circumstances.
It's an ideal balance that furthers the message that this is an event for every senior.
This year's senior class has made the event more inclusive, and hopefully future classes will follow their lead.
