Another administrator is heading south.
Next March, Provost Ron Daniels will leave to become the president of Johns Hopkins.
In his short three years here, Daniels improved financial-aid efforts and research programs and played a central role in implementing parts of President Gutmann's Penn Compact. His creation of the Civic Scholars Program and leadership of Penn's efforts after Hurricane Katrina also helped boost the University's community involvement.
That's why this change is a tremendous loss for Penn. While we're sad to see him go, we congratulate the provost and wish him the best of luck in Baltimore.
On the bright side, it's nice to see our administrators filling top leadership positions at other schools. Former Wharton Dean Patrick Harker's move to the president's office at the University of Delaware and the provost's move to JHU underscore Penn's role as a training ground for leaders in higher education.
We hope the next provost will overcome any disruption caused by the change and will fill the big shoes that Daniels leaves behind.
