Students returning to Penn will probably notice some of the bigger changes - new faculty, more housing and even a building name change. Even with the new developments, Penn's still the same exciting place you've grown to love.
As for the Class of 2012, welcome! With higher SAT scores and impressive leadership experiences, you're as talented as they come.
You're probably busy with NSO and move-in, so we'll make it quick and offer three pieces of cliched - but absolutely essential - advice.
Explore Philly: You'll hear this from every person, but that's because it's true. Philadelphia's an accessible - and digestible - area with diverse neighborhoods. Want a big-city feeling? See Comcast Center, our newest skyscraper. Love history? Visit Old City and take a stroll down Elfreth's Alley, the oldest continuously occupied street in America. Need open space? Jog through Fairmount Park, a vast expanse of greenery by the Schuylkill River.
Get outside your comfort zone: You'll rarely get chances to explore astrophysics or study the Akkadian language. Leave room in your schedule for classes outside your major. The same goes for activities. If you've never done community service, Penn's Civic House is a great place to start.
Meet new people: During the first few weeks of freshman year, you get a free social pass to randomly introduce yourself to your fellow classmates. Take advantage of it; get to know as many people as possible before you settle down with a group of friends.
And to all our readers, we hope you have a great year. Remember: This is your paper. E-mail us with ideas or letters to the editor, submit guest columns or join our staff. We can't wait to hear from you.
