From the shootings outside Club Wizards to the ubiquitous stickers warning students to watch their valuables in public spaces, the last year has seen an increase in the visibility of crime on campus. However, one constant in the situation was the hard work of Penn's Department of Public Safety.

At the times when students felt most unsafe, the presence of the Penn Police and Allied-Barton guards on campus helped to ensure that all activities took place normally.

Now, when many students have left Philadelphia to work, take classes elsewhere, or just relax, the continued vigilance of these forces allows those on campus to stay safe and reassured.

DPS should be commended for persisting in their wide patrols and attention to campus happenings.

In the summer, when students often come to visit Penn before applying or attending next fall, guards and police help parents and students realize that Penn's urban location does not greatly limit student lifestyle or security.

With the stifling heat and humidity that have overwhelmed the city this week, one must appreciate even more the contribution of these hard workers.

Our campus is safer and, just as importantly, feels safer because of their attention and strong presence at Penn and in the surrounding area.
