Today is the last day of publication for the 123rd Board of Editors. Beginning Monday, a new board of editors will take responsibility for Penn's newspaper of record.

When we started, one of our major goals was to open the lines of communication between those who run the paper and those who read it. We had heard that students felt the DP was aloof and unconcerned with their opinions - nothing could be farther from the truth.

A series of "Open Forums," where the outgoing Executive Editor, Shawn Safvi, opened himself up for conversation with the Penn community, was eye-opening. We also introduced online polls, which gave us the chance to (unscientifically) measure student opinion and the campus pulse.

Your feedback was especially valuable during campus controversies. When Norman Finkelstein, a political scientist whose research on the Holocaust is widely disputed, visited campus, the DP was proud to serve as a forum for your thoughts. As with other campus issues, from eastward expansion to student safety, we strove to bring you balanced coverage and a diverse set of viewpoints.

The DP also expanded its online content in the past year. Our Web site is full of new features, like videos and interactive graphics, to complement the stories you read in print.

We have the highest confidence in the incoming board. They share our dedication to improving the relationship between the DP and its readers, and will continue to do all they can to inform, listen to and engage you on a daily basis.
