Three professors from the Penn School of Medicine were elected this week as members of the Institute of Medicine.
Membership at the IOM, a Washington, D.C.-based organization that provides advice to policymakers and health professionals, is one of the nation's highest honors in biomedicine this week.
The selected professors are David Asch, who studies medicine and economics, Joel Cooper, who works in thoracic surgery, and Lee Fleisher, who studies anesthesiology.
With the addition of these three professors, Penn now has 61 IOM members.
The IOM named 65 new members total this year, bringing its total number of members worldwide to over 1,600.
