Philadelphia Police have begun an investigation into the fatal shooting of an alleged carjacker who was killed Monday during a struggle with Penn Police near 40th and Spruce streets.

The man was shot twice when a Penn Police officer's gun discharged as the officer and the man fought over the officer's weapon on the 200 block of Preston Street.

The man died Monday at 12:37 p.m. at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.

It is still unclear who fired the shots.

All shootings involving police are automatically subject to an investigation, which is being carried out by the Philadelphia Police Homicide Division.

Officials would not reveal the name of the officer implicated in the investigation, citing police procedure.

There is currently no timetable as to when the investigation will be completed, said Captain Ron McLean of the Philadelphia Police.

Police have also yet to identify the victim, McLean said.

The Homicide Division is currently checking the man's fingerprints against existing records, since he had no identification with him at the time.

If that fails to produce a match, police will turn to records of missing persons to try and find out the man's name.

The man was killed yesterday after he carjacked a white van at gunpoint in a parking garage near 33rd and Spruce streets and led police in a high-speed chase down Spruce Street, injuring one pedestrian and causing a pile-up of about five cars.

There have been six fatal police shootings this year in Philadelphia. No details of the investigations into those shootings have been released.

There were 20 fatal shootings by police last year in Philadelphia, the highest number since 1980.
