Penn saw seven years of frustration erased this weekend.
The women's rowing team breezed past their competition, winning all five races on Saturday and both trophies in the Class of '89 Plate. The team traveled to New Brunswick, N.J. to compete against Rutgers and Cornell.
"I am not surprised we did as well as we did," head coach Mike Lane said. "We had a good week of practice, and the confidence from last weekend helped in this weekend's success."
The Quakers took the Raritan Cup for the first time since 2000 for winning the varsity eight race and also took the all-around trophy for the first time since 2000. Penn has now won the plate three times in its history.
The varsity eight crossed the line in a 6:44, while the junior varsity finished in 6:55. The varsity four and second novice eight both won their races as well.
Meanwhile, the men's heavyweight rowing team placed second in varsity eight and first in the second varsity eight at the Childs Cup on Saturday against Columbia and Princeton.
This was the second cup race of the season for the Quakers. The Childs Cup, hosted by the Class of 1982, is the oldest race in which the Red and Blue compete.
Princeton won the varsity eight with a time of 6:07, almost 11 seconds in front of the Quakers. The Quakers came through with a 6:18, almost four seconds in front of the Lions.
The finish was a turnaround for the varsity eight, after being bested by the second varsity eight at the last race. At the Adams Cup last Saturday, the first boat crossed the line in 6:23, while the second came through with a 6:23.
The men's lightweight rowers hosted the Dodge Cup on Saturday against Yale and Columbia. The varsity eight did not have much luck on the river, coming in behind both Yale and Columbia. The Elis flew by the competition in all five races of the day.
The varsity eight clocked a 5:59 compared to Columbia's 5:52 and Yale's 5:50. In the second freshman eight the Quakers came in second with a 6:22. In the second varsity eight race, the Quakers crossed the line with a 6:22, nearly 23 seconds behind the Bulldogs.
This weekend, the heavyweight team hosts Columbia and Yale in the Blackwell Cup sponsored by the Class of 1967. The lightweight team is also at home, hosting Princeton in the Wood-Hammond Trophy.
The women's team travels to Princeton, N.J. to compete against Princeton and Dartmouth. This will be the Quakers' final race of the spring season, and they will contend for the Award Plaque.
