College applicants have rated Penn No. 10 in a survey of "dream schools" by the Princeton Review.
But their parents felt differently, with Penn failing to crack the top 10 at all.
For the third year in a row, New York University was rated the most popular "dream school" among prospective students.
In the Ivy League, Penn rated lower than all except Dartmouth and Cornell universities among applicants.
Like Penn, NYU was less popular among parents, who chose Stanford as their favorite, with Princeton and Harvard universities coming second and third.
The survey was conducted among nearly 5,000 college applicants and 1,200 parents. It asked students to name their "dream school," assuming cost and admission were not issues.
Parents did not seem to favor colleges in big cities, with NYU, Penn and Columbia University all failing to reach the top 10, and with Harvard ranked slightly lower than among applicants.
Nine percent of respondents said academic quality was the biggest factor in choosing a college, and 53 percent said they were looking for "the best overall fit."
