Not safe enough

To the Editor:

In response to recent articles about Public Safety's efforts to curb crime on campus:

I have recently been a victim of a break-in at 40th and Spruce St. I live at 4010 Spruce and over the break someone broke into our house and stole two flat-screen TVs, two guitars, a computer monitor and many other items.

The real problem with this is the complete lack of security that exists on Penn's campus. If we lived several blocks off campus then I could see this as normal but the location of the house is practically on Penn's campus and only about 20 yards from Allegro's Pizza. The next incredible part of this is that the criminals literally tore off the grate over the front door of our house and smashed through the front-door window. Where were the police? Where were the security officers? Nowhere.

This has not been the only problem associated with our house. I have had to call the police because of drug dealing on our front porch with bike security several yards away. I am very concerned with the level of security or complete lack of security at Penn. I think that this is an important issue at Penn because the crime occurred right in the main part of the community. I would be more than happy to answer any questions through e-mail, phone, or any way that this incident can be publicized.

We do not live in a safe area by any means and this needs to be addressed.
