Penn President Amy Gutmann has named Gregory Rost vice president and chief of staff for her office, officials announced yesterday.
Rost, currently the chief of staff at Temple University, will join Penn on Dec. 18. He will replace Joann Mitchell, who will assume the position of Vice President of Institutional Affairs.
Rost will be a senior policy advisor and will work with deans, senior administrators and various committees on school and community initiatives. He will also manage financial and administrative functions for the President's office.
"At every institution, there are people who get things done without getting the public credit they deserve. At Temple, that behind-the-scenes leader for the past six years has been Greg Rost," Temple President Ann Weaver Hart said.
"We will miss his creativity, energy, strategic insight and real-world understanding of what it takes to effect change," she added.
Before holding his position at Temple, Rost was the chief of staff for three years in the Edward Rendell mayoral administration.
A 1989 Penn alumnus, Rost also has served as deputy director of Penn's Fels Institute of Government, from which he graduated.
"Greg is a proven leader who is especially adept at managing both the traditional and emerging issues confronting higher education today," Gutmann said. "He is known to be a talented, forthright administrator and will be a tremendous asset to Penn."
