Penn Presbyterian Medical Center has been honored as one of the nation's most prestigious hospitals for cardiovascular treatments.

It was named one of the "100 Top Hospitals" for cardiovascular care by Solucient LLC, an independent health care business, in the category of teaching hospital with a cardiovascular residency program.

2006 marks the fifth consecutive year that the Center has received this honor.

Penn Presbyterian is the only hospital in Philadelphia awarded the Solucient distinction this year.

In determining the award's recipients, Solucient measured different areas of performance, including mortality and complications.

Six other hospitals in Pennsylvania were also named in the list, which was published in the Nov. 6 edition of the magazine Modern Medicine.

According to the Solucient report also published in the magazine, if non-winner hospitals were to provide cardiovascular care comparable to that provided by the top 100 hospitals, survival rates for cardiovascular patients would increase by more than 8,000 patients each year, according to the study's Web site.
