Last Friday night, the Social Planning and Events Committee had another success.
The organization, which books high-end speakers, musicians and entertainers, hosted a sold-out Rufus Wainwright concert in Irvine Auditorium.
It's great news for an organization that really dropped the ball only two years ago.
SPEC books the Spring Fling concert - one of the most heavily attended events at Penn - every year. In 2004, headliner Sonic Youth drew only a couple hundred fans to Perelman Quadrangle, resulting in a major embarrassment for SPEC and major disappointment for many students. About four times as many students saw Wainwright perform as attended 2004's Sonic Youth concert.
But, as the attendance at Wainwright's concert showed again, SPEC has made vast improvements.
And last year, students were surveyed on their top choices for Spring Fling bands, and one of students' top choices, OAR, was selected as a result. We hope the trend of listening to students' preferences continues for this year's Spring Fling.
