Pennsylvania has given $3.5 million to an organization that includes Penn for nanotechnology research.
The grant is part of $11.1 million given to various institutions across the state for research in nanotechnology, the creation and study of devices between 1 and 100 nanometers in size. A sheet of paper is around 100,000 nm thick.
The $3.5 million will go directly to the Nanotechnology Institute of Philadelphia - made up of Penn, Drexel University and a private firm, Ben Franklin Technology Partners.
Pennsylvania State University received $2.6 million to develop hands-on nanotechnology learning activities that can be distributed among high schools, universities and companies. PSU also received an additional $2.5 million for other nanotechnology research.
