The voting booths have opened.
For the next week, the Class of 2010 will have the chance to pick their representatives to Penn's student government, the Undergraduate Assembly.
From some of the campaign slogans and Facebook.com ads, the whole process may not appear serious at first. However, there are few student organizations that can have an impact on every undergraduate at Penn.
Moreover, there are no other organizations that allow the entire undergraduate student body to elect its governing body.
From distributing funds to student groups to hiring buses to take you to the airport, Penn's student government has an impact. So it's worth spending a few minutes to get acquainted with the candidates and pick those of them whom you trust will do the job well.
In most student elections, far less than half of the student body vote casts a vote. However, as 37 percent of all undergraduates voted in last year's elections, turnout is growing.
Hopefully, that trend continues with the Class of 2010.
