Tonight, the Penn men's basketball team will participate in March Madness, one of the most sacred spring traditions. But few probably have noticed because students and the University don't seem to care.
During the recent Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy, Penn set up a projector television in Houston Hall for students on which to watch the games. But even though Penn is now on the screen, no viewing parties are scheduled.
So with Penn making a rare appearance on the national-sports stage, it seems that no effort has been made to rally students to the occasion.
No posters.
No flyers.
No mass e-mails -- at least none that have reached the staff of The Daily Pennsylvanian.
Admittedly, Penn is facing a mammoth squad from the University of Texas. But, win or lose, students should relish in the chance to see their fellow students playing on national television.
In addition, every school that plays in the NCAA Tournament is entitled to a free 30-second advertisement aired during their game. And with so many people following Texas, Penn has a chance to spread the word about itself.
Unfortunately, Penn officials weren't aware of the opportunity and do not plan on airing a commercial during the game.
Once again, Penn basketball has done a terrific job in making it to the national tournament. And, once again, the administration doesn't seem to care.
Maybe an upset will grab their attention.
