This year's Spring Fling concert is shaping up well. After last year's embarrassing 300-person turnout for headliner Sonic Youth, organizers bounced back, selecting a band that appeals to a much broader base of Penn students.
And their efforts have paid off.
Tickets to Of A Revolution and Scratch Track have been going quickly. So far, the Social Planning and Events Committee, the organization responsible for planning Fling, has sold more than 900 to concertgoers.
After the disappointment of last year's concert, Fling organizers promised to do better next year by listening to student feedback, and they did just that. SPEC surveyed students on their musical tastes earlier this academic year, and OAR was one of the top picks.
SPEC followed through on its promise by selecting the band to play at Fling, and the response from students demonstrates their approval. While some experimentation in band selection should be accepted, SPEC -- as an organization representing and receiving funding from the entire student body -- should always try to pick bands that appeal to as many people as possible.
After a rough experience last year, it's succeeded, and we hope SPEC will be rewarded with a sell-out crowd on April 7.
