Last year's Spring Fling concert was simply an embarrassment. Fewer than 400 people turned out to see little-known and over-the-hill Sonic Youth perform in Wynn Commons. However, after last year's overwhelmingly negative response, the Social Planning and Events Committee -- the group responsible for Fling planning -- seems to be working hard to bring the Fling concert back into the mainstream.
As part of its efforts, SPEC promised to take students' input more seriously.
It's lived up to its promise after having conducted a survey of students' preferences earlier this school year. The 521 students who responded urged the selection committee to find a well-known pop act. And among the respondents top suggestions: O.A.R.
SPEC not only listened to students' suggestions but went the extra mile and secured a band that is well known by Penn students -- a far cry from last year's bands, which also included Cat Power and Citizen Cope.
Beyond the fact that students expressed interest in SPEC's choice, everyone should agree that O.A.R. will make a terrific Fling band. Its musical style will be perfectly suited for Penn students who are looking to rock out over Fling weekend.
In this selection, SPEC has made a major step toward rebuilding its reputation among Penn's student body.
And whether or not every student likes O.A.R., at least it will sell more than 400 tickets.
