Fling is in the air.

"Get Your Fling On" has been selected as the theme of this year's Spring Fling festival, which will be held April 7 and 8.

The Social Planning and Events Committee's Fling component also announced that the annual Fling concert will be held in Wynn Commons, also the location of last year's show. In previous years, the concert was held on Franklin Field.

"Get Your Fling On," which follows last year's theme of "Destination: Fling" and the previous year's "Some Fling for Everybody," will be printed on T-shirts and possibly other souvenirs.

"In the past we've just made T-shirts, but we are looking into other options," Fling Committee co-Director and College junior Anna Pearce said, noting that many people have expressed interest in other merchandise.

The top five theme suggestions were voted on by members of the SPEC Fling committee according to Fling co-Director and College junior Makeda Kefale.

The committee will also sponsor a contest for students to design a logo to accompany this year's theme. The winner of this competition will receive $100 and two tickets to this year's Fling concert.

"This year's theme has an enthusiastic feeling that emphasizes the festive nature of Fling as a time to celebrate spring and reconnect with friends," College senior and Fling Committee co-Director Jake Chanin said in a statement.

Some students, however, are apathetic about the theme announcement.

"It's just a title. I don't think what they call it matters," College senior Joe Russo said of the theme announcement. "If they didn't have it in the Quad, that would have mattered, but not this."

SPEC Concerts co-Director and Wharton and Engineering senior Matt Mizrahi said he plans to announce the band for this year's concert in mid-March.

Last year's show, which featured Sonic Youth, Cat Power and Citizen Cope, was sparsely attended.

Despite initial debate among administrators over the location of Fling, the festivities will remain in the Quadrangle this year.

"We really do think that the Quad is a central location of campus, and it's very much a part of Penn tradition," Kefale said.

Others felt less strongly about the location.

"Having it in the Quad doesn't matter that much to me. As long as they have it, I don't care," College junior Jomar Thompson said.

But Pearce argued that the essence of Spring Fling rests in the Quad.

"Having it there is really about the unification of students and having a good time, and emphasizes being a part of the Penn community," Pearce said.
