With 4,148 applications to the Class of 2010 already filed away in the admissions office, Penn has blown past many of its peers when it comes to recruiting prospective students. But an even more impressive feat -- and one that speaks volumes about the University's progress -- is the number of prestigious scholarships awarded to students this past week. For the second time in the school's history, Penn can boast both a Rhodes and a Marshall scholar. These awards are more than just a great opportunity for the individual recipients. They can also help Penn further establish itself as a prominent research university. In many ways, the quality of students graduating from a school says even more than the number of students applying for admission. These awards also send an important message to the student body. The two seniors who won are proof that these prestigious honors are attainable. The Center for Undergraduate Research and Fellowships has done a good job of soliciting an increasing number of students to apply but there is still more to be done. More applicants inevitably leads to more awards, which can only further enhance Penn's reputation.
