Blacked out

To the Editor:

I'm a Penn freshman from Center City, and I am a Philadelphia sports-a-holic. I was deeply saddened Tuesday night as the Sixers took on the Milwaukee Bucks. I was not sad after the game because Allen Iverson and Chris Webber combined for 67 points and we still lost, but rather because I couldn't watch it!

How could a university in the middle of Philadelphia not have Comcast cable or even Comcast SportsNet in its cable lineup? Penn is robbing its students of one of the essential parts of being in Philadelphia: its professional sports teams.

Here's a university of 10,000 undergraduate students, with most of the 2,500 freshmen new to Philly. Most of these freshmen are going to be in Philly for at least the next 4 years. Many want to "become" Philadelphians. Yet how can they do this without being able to watch more than a few games of each of our teams?

Penn's lack of Comcast SportsNet for on-campus housing is heinous. Please, somebody do something!

Construction space

To the Editor:

Given the recent commotion surrounding the postal lands and building of the McNeil Center, it is surprising that Penn managed to quietly fence off yet another portion of green space. The DP reported that Andrea Blum's art piece will take up 4,800 square feet, which means that the sculpture will have a footprint much larger than most people's houses.

The public-art act is a worthy cause, but given the choice, it seems unlikely that many students or local residents would support yet another abstract sculpture at the cost of our ever-disappearing grass. Moving forward with the postal lands, University and student leaders need to ensure they take all stakeholders into account when making decisions.
