To the Editor:
The article "A truthful tour? Not all the time" (DP, 10/7/05) brought about much disappointment to Kite and Key members who are dedicated and proud of their work as tour guides and student ambassadors. They have a right to be angry.
The title does not reflect the article itself, but instead sensationalizes what is a false and broad generalization. It is inappropriate to indict the Kite and Key program and the dedication and meaningful work of over 150 student volunteers on the experience of two tours.
While certainly some facts highlighted in the article were incorrect, to imply that the entire tour is a lie is demoralizing and upsetting to those volunteers who give so freely of their time to the University, admissions and to prospective students. The purpose of our tours is not to sell the University, but rather to try and give prospective students an understanding of what undergraduate life is like at Penn. Tour guides offer a unique, student perspective.
As such, we have no doubt that these incorrect facts presented by the tour guides are in no way done consciously or because they have been told to, but rather in their enthusiasm to share their love of Penn with prospective students and their families. Walk around Penn and talk to students, the school spirit and pride in being here is contagious.
The Undergraduate Admissions Office values the commitment of Kite and Key tour guides. The positive feedback we receive is proof that they make a difference every day. We thank them for all that they do for Penn and our visitors.
