Kofi Annan will have some company at this year's Commencement ceremony, as five leaders from the worlds of academia, music, business and television have also been selected to receive honorary degrees.
Musician Quincy Jones, philosopher Saul Kripke, Comcast founder Ralph Roberts, journalist Judy Woodruff and the University of Washington's Nancy Woods will all be at the May 16 event, held at Franklin Field.
As the most-nominated Grammy artist ever -- with 76 nominations and 26 awards -- Jones has garnered fame as a musician and producer. He has worked with jazz and pop artists and produced two best-selling Michael Jackson albums. In 1993, he partnered with David Salzman to create Quincy Jones/David Salzman Entertainment which produced the NBC series Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and currently publishes Vibe magazine. Jones also runs his own record label, Qwest Records.
Woodruff is the host of CNN's Judy Woodruff's Inside Politics, and has worked for the MacNeil/Lehrer NewsHour, PBS's Frontline and NBC News.
As a graduate of Wharton, Roberts is the only Penn alumnus of the group. He is the founder and chairman of the Philadelphia-based Comcast Corporation.
Woods is the dean of the School of Nursing at the University of Washington and a Family and Child Nursing professor. Kripke is a professor of Philosophy at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York specializing in modal logic.
