To the Editor:
I was saddened to read about the passing of Kathy Engebretson ("Former top financier succumbs to cancer," The Daily Pennsylvanian, 2/15/05).
When I was a beat reporter for the DP, Kathy and I talked regularly, and no matter how many pieces I wrote about the sagging endowment, she was always cheerful and pleasant. While getting information from other administrators was like pulling teeth from unruly children, Kathy literally tore pages out of the financial reports neatly lining her bookshelves if it meant providing me with the data I needed to accurately report a story.
Kathy's time at Penn teaches us that one can hold a position of great responsibility but still remain friendly, accessible and true to one's self.
