To the Editor:

While last Thursday's article about the marketable value of a liberal arts education ("Professors defend value of liberal arts study," The Daily Pennsylvanian, 2/3/05) does mention some important benefits of the liberal arts, I think it neglects the idea of the inherent value of the humanities.

While it may be true that the things we learn in an English class will help us in our careers, there is also a value in increasing our own knowledge of important subjects and achieving fulfillment in areas that aren't necessarily going to increase our salaries.

I am sure that any professor of the humanities would be quite offended if you told them that the main benefit their students are getting from their class is that they'll make better businesspeople.
