[Pauline Baniqued/The Daily Pennsylvanian] College sophomore Deb Elias leads a cappella group Off the Beat at SDT's charity event, which lasted from midnight to 3 a.m. yesterday morning.

According to Wharton sophomore Ilana Messing's t-shirt, the number-two reason more than 450 people crowded the Sigma Delta Tau chapter house Saturday night was to "To [SDT], drink and be merry" -- the SDT letters, in their Greek form, resemble the word "eat."

The members of SDT held their annual philanthropic event, "Late Night with Sigma Delta Tau" from 12 a.m. to 3 a.m. on Dec. 4 at their on-campus house located at 3833 Walnut Street.

The event raised approximately $3,200, which will go toward SDT's national philan-thropy, Prevent Child Abuse America.

"We have a really great atmosphere here tonight," said College junior and SDT Vice President Beth Shapiro, who was recently elected SDT's next president. "Everyone's really excited about it."

Students spent the night enjoying SDT's very own home-baked goods, a variety of raffle prizes, Lorenzo's Pizza, nonstop entertainment. Performances included a cappella groups Inspiration, Pennchants, The Excelano Project and Off the Beat, in addition to student band Andy Kaplan and the Four-Leaf Clovers.

"Well, I'm not gonna lie ... I came for the Eagles tickets," Wharton sophomore Paul Mule said.

Raffle tickets were sold during the event for $1. Prizes included valuable Eagles, Knicks and Phillies tickets, as well as Stephen Starr restaurant and Douglas Cosmetics gift certificates. The donated raffle prizes totaled between $3,000 and $4,000. Raffle ticket sales earned between $400 and $500.

People were at the event from the minute the doors opened at midnight, and the house quickly became packed around 1:30 in the morning.

"There is just a great vibe going around," College sophomore Tyler Ritter said.

In the upstairs living room, throngs of excited students enjoyed the constant entertainment and wide variety of baked goods. In the downstairs kitchen, tables and chairs were set up for eating pizza and socializing.

Sophomore class president and Wharton student Andrew Kaplan spent much of the night enjoying the company of his friends in the downstairs kitchen of the SDT house. According to Kaplan, everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves, the food and the entertainment.

The sorority spent more than six weeks planning for the fundraising event, which is held annually.

At the end of the night all of the SDT girls seemed equally pleased.

"I think it's been a great success. It's been a lot of hard work," SDT Fundraising Chair and College sophomore Jaclyn Cohen said.

Tickets were sold for $5 on Locust Walk during the week preceeding the event, and $7 at the door. Ticket sales accounted for $2,700 to $2,800 of the total proceeds.
