The search for the next provost will be under way shortly and it is expected to be a long one, as provost is the most important position that the University must fill. While we understand that many qualified candidates will be considered for the post, we urge the University not to overlook one person who has proven he is qualified for the job: Interim Provost Peter Conn.

While a full endorsement is improper in a context where the contenders will remain unknown to the general public, we believe Conn is uniquely suited to the post.

As the University's chief academic officer, the provost has many duties, which we feel Peter Conn would be able to perform, and perform well. As deputy provost for the last five years, Conn has intimately familiarized himself with the office and would transition easily. Though Amy Gutmann has so far done a good job of getting acclimated to the role of president, appointing Conn would give her excellent support, especially in conjunction with recently appointed Executive Vice President Craig Carnaroli. Between Carnaroli and Conn are many years of knowledge on the intricacies of Penn as an institution.

It is very important that the new provost have a detailed and deep understanding of how Penn functions. While it is possible for someone else to come in and learn this, we feel it is best to simply promote someone from within this institution. Peter Conn is well qualified, having served the University of Pennsylvania in several different capacities for over 30 years as a tenured professor, faculty master of Hill House, dean of the College, deputy provost and his current position. Additionally, Conn would have the support of many members of the faculty, something that a new appointee would have to earn.

We also feel that Conn's interest in and familiarity with Philadelphia would serve an important role in Penn's relations with the city. Peter Conn is as committed to Philadelphia's history as he is to its future, and Penn is poised to play a significant role in that future.

Since the search for top administrators is a delicate and relatively private matter, we cannot know for sure who else the University might consider. However, we hope Penn gives Peter Conn serious consideration as an excellent candidate for the position of provost.
