After a 5-2 defeat to Brown on Friday, the Penn men's tennis team stepped up to its next Ivy League challenge and settled for nothing less than victory.

On Saturday, the Lott Tennis Courts were the site of the Quakers' first Ivy League victory of the season, as they finished with a 5-2 decision over Yale.

Securing the match for the Red and Blue was junior Anthony Pu.

After falling just short on Friday of what would have been a huge upset to the Bears' nationally ranked doubles team, Pu was determined to remain strong until his victory was certain.

His first two sets were followed by a tiebreaking third set, in which he finished off Yale's Johnny Lu, 7-6(2).

In addition to Pu, Penn's second, third and fourth singles players also pushed the Red and Blue to victory, as freshman Mikhail Bekker and juniors Todd Lecher and Craig Rubin defeated Andrew Rosenfeld, Brandon Wai and Rowan Reynolds of Yale, respectively.

In doubles action, junior co-captain David Lynn teamed with Bekker at the No. 2 position, recording their second straight victory with an 8-6 win over Yale.

Fortunately, their teammates at the No. 3 position were also able to defeat their opponents, as Lecher and Rubin paired together to conquer the Elis.

As they successfully finished their match, 8-2, Penn took the doubles point and continued to meet its challenges in the singles bracket.

Penn improved to 12-5 on the season with the win and 1-2 in the Ivy League.

The Quakers hope their success will carry into their performance this weekend, as they travel to Hanover, N.H., to face Dartmouth for their next Ivy competition.

"Every player on the team, top to bottom, has been fighting very hard," Lecher said. "Hopefully we can build on the win from this weekend because everyone knows we still have a lot of work ahead of us."
