According to an article in the Philadelphia Daily News, Germantown Academy senior Joe Gill has committed to Penn to play basketball for the Quakers.

The Daily News ranked the 6-foot-6 small forward among the seven best at his position in the city.

Gill becomes the second prep player to commit to play for coach Fran Dunphy this school year after 6-2 guard David Whitehurst from Lawrenceville Prep. committed in November. Whitehurst was an AAU teammate of freshman guard Ibby Jaaber.

Gill could not be reached for comment.Dunphy was unable to comment on Gill's commitment due to Ivy League recruiting policy.

On Tuesday, Gill scored eight points -- all in the second half -- against Episcopal Academy in a 47-44 win for the Patriots.

The Patriots' swingman took part in the Coaches vs. Cancer All-Star Basketball Doubleheader at Norristown High School in April of 2003. He played for the Inter-Academic team and tallied eight points on 3-of-7 shooting, including 2-of-2 from behind the arc.

Gill was honored on Jan. 14 by the Markward Memorial Basketball Club in recognition of his play in the Inter-Academic League.

On Dec. 11, 2002, Gill's Patriots went up against Penn freshman Mark Zoller's Saint Joseph's Prep squad. Then-junior Gill tallied 11 points, five rebounds and five assists. Zoller scored 28 points on 12-for-18 shooting while grabbing seven rebounds. Dunphy was in attendance for the game.

Playing alongside Gill on the Germantown Academy squad is junior Ryan Ayers -- who is the son of Philadelphia 76ers head coach Randy Ayers.

At this point last year, the only players to commit to Penn were freshmen Steve Danley and Ryan Pettinella. Zoller and Jaaber committed to play for Dunphy after the season had ended.

This year's recruiting class will be filling voids left by the current seniors, guards Jeff Schiffner and Charlie Copp and center Adam Chubb.
