Devin Harris and Freddie Owens were able to use their speed down the stretch to lead No. 15 Wisconsin to a 64-53 win over Penn in both teams' season opener. Harris led the Badgers with 16 points but none were bigger than his three as he slashed to the basket in the closing minutes, making the shot and drawing contact from Penn guard Charlie Copp. The play extended Wisconsin's lead to five points and Owens' opportunistic defense and clutch foul shooting ended any hopes of a late game comeback.
Senior Jeff Schiffner led the way for the Red and Blue with a game-high 20 points. Last season's NCAA-leading three point shooter started this season off right where the last one ended, going 3-for-5 from long distance. The frontcourt tandem of junior Jan Fikiel and senior Adam Chubb combined to score 16 points but struggled to keep the more physical Badgers off the rebounds.
Check back on Monday for more about the game.
