It seems difficult to believe that Philadelphia's largest tourist attraction will be shut down until further notice simply because the city reopened a block of Chestnut Street.
Such is the case in Philadelphia this week, however, as the National Park Service has cited security concerns in closing Independence Mall until a new plan can be developed to protect one of the most historic city blocks in America.
Since the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, the area had been shut down to traffic for increased security and protection. But businesses have struggled as a direct result of the street closure. Restaurants have been forced to close, and area shops are sinking.
Mayor John Street decided to reopen the block to traffic in an effort to increase business and make the area more accessible to tourists. After pleading with Street to keep the block closed, the Park Service took this pre-emptive measure, despite the fact that traffic is permitted on the east and west sides of the complex.
At a time when patriotism is at a fervor and the economy is struggling, Independence Mall is one of the most important tourist attractions in the country. The decision to shut down these buildings until further notice is a petty one and is denying this city and its businesses much-needed funds.
We hope that the Park Service realizes the error of its ways and reopens Independence Mall promptly. An extended closure could prove to be a significant blow to a city very much in need of tourism.
