W. Tennis blitzes Maryland With junior Alice Pirsu back in the lineup, the No. 40 Penn women's tennis team aced Maryland yesterday, defeating the No. 59 Terrapins, 6-1. Beginning the match with three convincing doubles' victories, the Quakers (6-2) never looked back. Only No. 6 Caroline Stanislawski dropped her match -- coming in three sets, 6-4, 3-6, 10-6. Pirsu had little trouble in her return, defeating Ramona But, 6-1, 6-1 in her singles match. Earlier in the day, Pirsu teamed with Penn sophomore Shelah Chao to win the doubles point, 8-6. The Quakers had no problems with anyone else in the lineup, winning every match of the day in straight sets. Penn junior Nicole Ptak drew the Terrapins only ranked player -- No. 88 Emily Marker -- and disposed of her 6-2, 7-6. The Quakers also received individual victories by Raluca Ciulei, Sanela Kunovac and Chao. The Maryland team (6-3) was recently hit by controversy when nationally-ranked Delia Causevic quit the team for personal reasons. Last fall Causevic reached the semifinals of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association East Regionals before falling to the eventual champion -- Harvard's Courtney Bergman. Pirsu reached the finals of the same tournament before falling to Bergman. -- Zachary Silver
