While the Penn baseball team has rattled off six straight wins since returning from its spring trip to Fresno, Calif., things aren't as peachy in the Penn clubhouse as one would expect.
The Quakers have already lost three players from their starting lineup, just 14 games into their 40 game season.
Juniors Bryan Graves and Mike Goldblatt both have broken wrists and sophomore Alex Blagojevich is out with an unknown illness.
"Those three are out for the year," Penn coach Bob Seddon yesterday after Penn's 4-0 win over Lehigh at Veterans Stadium. "[Blagojevich] has got an illness they haven't figured out and so forth and so on."
Graves injured himself on Penn's trip to California when he ran into the outfield wall in an attempt to catch a fly ball.
Goldblatt broke his wrist in a collision with a West Chester baserunner in the first game of Penn's doubleheader against the Golden Rams Saturday at Murphy Field.
The Quakers won both games against West Chester, 5-4 and 8-6. The second win came without Goldblatt's assistance at third base.
Penn has looked to its depth to fill the void left behind by the three starters.
"We've got depth on this team, and we've got a lot of injuries. So the depth is getting a chance, and we're winning," Seddon said.
After last night's win over the Engineers, the Red and Blue will take on another Patriot League school this afternoon.
Lafayette will make the trip to Murphy Field from Easton, Pa., for a 3:00 p.m. start.
This afternoon's game will prime Penn for its Ivy League opener against Cornell on Saturday in New York.
"It's just a warmup for Saturday, but we're going to win," Seddon said. "We're going to be pitching freshmen, and I know they can win. Right now the kids want to play. They don't want to sleep."
Seddon's players had better be well rested for today's game. A win over Lafayette would be the 600th of Seddon's career.
